If ancient Chinese culture referenced its yearly cycles based on a diverse cluster of animals, our post-modern mobile society now has the right to do similar, however using keyboard characters rather than mythical creatures. 2013 saw the ‘Hashtag’ phenomenon take on a whole new place in society of which everyone, from baby boomers to Justin Timberlake & Jimmy Fallon, speak, write and reference on a quotidian basis.

Here is a look back over the past 12 months of what prominent hashtags helped shape society’s social media conversations all over the world.

The Beginning of Something Amazing

This year saw the release and immediate rise of Vine, Facebook’s failed $3 billion attempt to buyout Snapchat and multiple updates to major platforms such as promoted pins on Pinterest and Sponsored pictures on Instagram. We must remind ourselves we are only at the start of a cultural shift in society; mobile is now the only form of media which is growing, and over half of the United States partake in the ‘dual screen phenomenon’. Today will look vastly different to 10 years from now, which will look vastly different to 10 years from then. And so as this year comes to a close, it is evident we are living in a very exciting period which is now fueled by the Internet across all devices bringing people closer together.
